Pyran Partners with NAGASE Specialty Materials for Market Development and Supply of Renewable 1,5-pentanediol diacrylate (PDDA)

The partnership enables new markets for acrylate and methacrylate derivatives of Pyran’s bio-based 1,5-pentanediol (PDO)

MADISON, Wisc. and ITASCA, Ill., Jan. 25, 2022 – Pyran, Inc. and NAGASE Specialty Materials (NSM) today announced they have partnered for the exclusive conversion of Pyran’s bio-based 1,5-pentanediol (PDO) to renewable 1,5-pentanediol diacrylate (PDDA) and other acrylate and methacrylate derivatives. NSM, a manufacturer of chemical technologies and distributor of specialty chemicals, will produce PDDA and other derivatives in the USA and will market them in North America and Europe.

Through this agreement, NAGASE will be the first to derivatize Pyran’s sustainable PDO for use in UV-cured formulations from coatings to 3D printing. Pyran is a fast-growing company that produces innovative 5-carbon products from renewable resources.

“NAGASE is excited to solidify our partnership with Pyran and further our mission to bring solutions to the market that are based on innovative technologies and support our ongoing commitment to sustainability goals,” said NSM’s Business Development Director JP Masson. “Pyran has pioneered a process to produce 1,5-pentanediol (PDO) from renewable sources in a cost-competitive fashion. NAGASE will convert Pyran’s PDO to 1,5-pentanediol diacrylate (PDDA) and offer it to customers in the UV-cured market looking for sustainable and market-competitive alternatives to more conventional materials like hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA). We believe PDDA will be an important material for formulators to have in their toolbox and our team of experts is looking forward to introducing it to the market.”

Pyran CEO Mel Luetkens added: “At Pyran, we are committed to delivering commercial value and enhancing our ability to expand the company’s high-performance, cost-efficient products and technology portfolio. This partnership with NAGASE Specialty Materials further strengthens our ability to do just that. NAGASE brings in-depth product and market knowledge, and we are pleased to partner with them to enable new chemistries and allow customers to open new markets with high-performing building blocks.”

Pyran uses renewable feedstocks from crop resources, such as corn cobs, to make 1,5-pentanediol (PDO). This essential material enhances the performance of everyday products, such as paints, coatings, adhesives and more. The company’s renewable 5-carbon products replace expensive, petroleum-based chemicals, which are limited in supply.

Pyran’s renewable-based, on-purpose production will enable customers to expand their businesses with better performing and more sustainable products.

Pyran continues to transform its technology into meaningful commercial solutions for several industries. In addition to its recent partnership with NAGASE, Pyran is actively moving to the next level of commercialization by scaling production near Houston, Texas, and producing tons of product to meet qualification requirements and increased customer demand.
